The city has once again been certified as a 7-star Garbage Free City and received Water Plus certification. Last year, the city ranked 10th nationally and 3rd in the state. This is the first time Pimpri-Chinchwad has achieved the top rank in Maharashtra.
At the awards ceremony held on Thursday in Delhi, Union Minister of Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar and Minister of State Tokhan Sahu presented the award to Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh, Chief Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni, and Deputy Commissioner of the Health Department Sachin Pawar.
Under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs annually evaluates cities based on cleanliness, waste management, citizen participation, use of IT, toilet facilities, and sewage systems. In the 2024 competition, 4,589 cities participated, and Pimpri-Chinchwad earned the 7th rank.
Shekhar Singh, PCMC Commissioner and Administrator, said, “I sincerely congratulate every citizen, sanitation worker, officer, and volunteer who worked for the city's cleanliness. This honour is the result of our collective efforts. Our responsibility has now increased, and many more sustainable initiatives will be launched in the future.”
Singh further said, “Due to various initiatives by the civic body, the city has successfully implemented proper collection, segregation, reuse, and disposal of waste. In every ward, wet and dry waste is collected separately from households. Processing units near the source, composting plants, recycling units, and biogas systems are being used effectively. As a result, the city earned the prestigious 7-Star Garbage Free City rating.
The city has also performed well in sewage management, with efficient sewage treatment plants, conservation of natural water bodies, and reuse of treated water.”
The civic officials said that the success of Swachh Survekshan was also active involvement of citizens.
Deputy Commissioner of the Health Department, Sachin Pawar, said, “The success of Swachh Survekshan is not just the civic body's effort but also the result of active involvement by citizens, social organisations, volunteers, schools, and industries. The residents have played a key role in regular waste segregation, reduced use of plastic, and maintaining public hygiene.”
“The award received by Pimpri-Chinchwad for cleanliness is praiseworthy. Commissioner Shekhar Singh provided timely guidance for the city’s cleanliness. Thanks to the support of Health Department staff and every citizen, the city ranked 7th in the country and 1st in the state. Going forward, we will make more efforts to keep the city clean and beautiful. Special care will be taken starting now to aim for the number one spot in the country next year,” said Sachin Pawar, Deputy Commissioner, Health Department, PCMC.
