I recently ran into someone I dated briefly when we were younger and in college, and we agreed to meet for dinner. We have met a few more times since then, and he has begun to express an interest in me and my life. We are both single and I get a sense that he has romantic feelings for me again. I am not averse to this and would like to consider a possibility of something happening between us, but I wonder about whether he can still feel something for me after all this time. We did love each other a lot back then, but we were also so immature which is why I wonder if he is mistaking nostalgia for something deeper. How do I figure out if what he says is real?
The only way to know is to keep meeting him and gauge whether his actions match his words. It’s not impossible for someone to feel the same way after a long time, but reality creeps in when you both have a chance to get to know each other better now and find out how each of you has changed. You don’t have to commit to anything, which is also great because it means you have an opportunity to talk about things that bother you. Ask him about his feelings, why he believes this can work, and what he wants from this relationship if that is his intention. People change, obviously, and there will be differences in how each of you approaches this, but you will only know what those changes are when you put in the time.
